Not all rare earths are created equal
The magnet and heavy REOs found in the Makuutu basket are unique: they include Neodymium (Nd), Dysprosium (Dy), Praseodymium (Pr) and Terbium (Tb). Additionally, Makuutu is one of the largest Scandium resources in the world.
Without these critical rare earth elements, the world will not be able to achieve net-zero carbon ambitions.
The Makuutu Project is receiving global interest, and is described as one of the largest Ionic Adsorption Clay (IAC) deposits in the world, becoming a long-life producer of strategic elements which will support global policies focused on establishing alternative, sustainable rare earths supply chains.
These magnet and heavy REOs are required for:
- Use in high end applications – Electric Vehicles (EVs), offshore wind turbines and defence programs
- Scandium will unlock new industries and blue-sky opportunities in the
lightweighting transportation solutions across automotive, aerospace, space, marine and rail - Geo-political security requires countries to secure sustainable supplies for
industrial development of new technologies (specifically manufacturing
and defence).
The Makuutu Project’s long-term strategic importance and value is set to increase as demand dramatically exceeds supply to support EV and offshore wind thematics, along with geopolitical tensions. Today, in excess of 95% of the worlds current supply of heavy REOs is sourced from southern China and Myanmar, and Makuutu represents a viable alternative for western markets to satiate supply demand.
The Makuutu Rare Earths Project will become a long-life mine for 50 years and beyond as exploration continues across all six tenements. This Project will support the economic growth and development of Uganda’s economy, and has been given Flagship Project status in Uganda.
